Where my work is concerned, to me there is nothing quite like standing back at the end of a project and taking a minute to look at the work that you’ve had a part in taking through to completion. Be it a set of steps, a wall, patio, path or pond; knowing that I’ve left my own foot print on the land for someone to enjoy gives me the greatest satisfaction of all.
Since leaving school, getting my hands dirty has always been a past time of mine, be it on or off the rugby pitch. In fact it was rugby that initially put me on the path towards the construction industry. Whilst on a twelve-month rugby exchange in Vancouver on the west coast of Canada, when I wasn’t passing an egg shaped ball, I was labouring for a medium sized construction company specializing in domestic refurb and construction, inside and out. Combining the work with the beautiful and vast landscape of the Canadian outdoors, I knew then that construction was the profession for me.
Consequently, on arriving back from my travels I applied to undertake a degree in Environmental Construction Management and am currently in my final year due to graduate in 2011. Still determined to keep my hands in amongst the dirt during the holiday periods, I’ve maintained my practice in construction working in landscaping; always with a sustainable approach to the methods I use, and have worked solo on a number of private projects aiming to increase my portfolio. It is my belief that sustainable landscape design and build should be an important aspect of any development which will in turn maximise the quality of a scheme, complement the local landscape, minimise long term maintenance inputs and reduce its impact on the environment. That is why, with the combined attributes of Sam, Jon & myself, the time is now right to expand and to really become a role model for other businesses in the region to follow.
