Topsham Hard & Soft Landscaping Design & Build Project

This devon landscaper project in Topsham was first initiated in July and was completed to the state shown over a month period. 2 days were spent on a landscape design that was revised a few times just to get it spot on. Any one site change dramatically when the hard landscaping starts so the design has to be adapted sometimes depending on the initial outcome. The site required mini digger work and the access was very poor and precarious. Fortunately, and with a lot of perserverance we were able to attach a winch from the Seriously Good Landscapes truck around a pulley block on a tree and then haul the mini digger up backwards. Once this was achieved, progression was quick. The clients were very keen on reducing, reusing and reclaiming as much as possible from the existing site; something Seriously Good Landscapes do best. The stepping stones were salvaged from the old patio area. The gravel was a local Devon gravel. There was a fair amount of tree management in the preliminary stages. All the cord wood was saved to create the slanted retainers and the natural path edgings. The images above depict the construction of the back bone of the landscaping project before the planting commences in the spring. The patio was laid in such a way that alpine and herb plants can be planted within the holes that would liven the space and provide an infusion of scents when socialising in that area. As far as the decked area went, we wanted it to fit in with the natural garden theme so we kept the man made materials to a minimum, using stag oak uprights to then inter-twine the wire to make the balustrade. As well as the planting in the spring we will be making a few more beautiful garden features so watch this space...

Ashburton Garden Landscaping- Form & Function

The Seriously Good Landscaping team were asked to create a functional front garden but without compromising on form in Ashburton, Devon. The owners were a young couple with no children and wanted an area to socialise with a young crowd without being over looked too much by neighbours (a difficult request on a line of terraced houses!) Nevertheless, we set about moving plants around into more suitable positions and once approved started creating a fire-pit. we erected a straining feature for a Wisteria to grow along that'd been left to grow along the ground. It'd put down 'suckers' so we carefully pulled them up with the roots still attached and planted them opposite on another strainer. We proposed to use the Wisteria as a thin hedge as a conventional hedge would take up too much space. The garden had a fantastic view up to Dartmoor so when sat around the Fire-pit we didn't want to obstruct the view so the strainers were slanted to maintain view infront and maintain privacy from windows behind. We used 'Stag Oak' branches as posts- naturally the best post material as they're so hard and provide amazing rusticity. Stag Oak Chunks were also used as the stools for the 'fire-pitters.' The fire-pit itself was made with large flat rocks and clay. Then once the fire was lit, the embers would sit beneath the meat for slow cooking to allow time for drinks and socialising whilst keeping warm around the fire with friends. A Photinia hedge was planted at the front for year-round screening from the road. We were finally asked to design and build a combined wheelie bin storage system and log store.

Bovey Tracey Landscaping- Garden Re-design & Build

On this occassion the Seriously Good Landscaping team were asked to a town house in Bovey Tracey, Devon, to advise on landscaping work at the rear of the house. A conservatory had been built on the back & the surrounding garden was a mixture of levels and elements. The clients were keen gardeners & knew what landscaping work they wanted which is always a bonus so a landscape design was not necessary. After a quick sketch up on the site and an approved landscaping quotation, we sent a two man landscaper team to carry out the work. The access was very tight & there was little chance of getting a mini digger into the garden so we worked like trojans to excavate a wall where we wanted the reclaimed sleeper retaining wall to be installed. Once that was erected and a simple set of steps built, it was two and a half days on the decking and one and a half days to erect a picket fence on the neighbouring boundary. Lay the plum slate with stepping stones amongst and finally, turfing & create a planter. The job went very smoothly- within the allocated times and within budget- Happy Days!

Christow, Devon Hard Garden Landscaping + Turfing

Another Hard Landscaping project in Christow, Devon. The client requested a landscape design to be produced that can be viewed above to work to. We usually design gardens to visualise the works required to get the garden to it's optimum appearence and function for the future. This way, if the client can only afford a certain part of the design, they can still come back to to fulfilling the work at a later date. This was evident with this landscape project and the first phase was implemented without planting so that the client could do it themselves & save the pennies. Therefore we produced the backbone for the final landscape. The project went well except for the British weather, that constantly hindered progress. However, we perservered and emerged triumphant after 3 days of retaining, laying blue slate chippings, shifting soil, turfing and creating the central stone feature.

Totnes Landscaper, Devon- Retainers, Deck, Turf, Pergola

Seriously Good Landscapes were called out to this Totnes, Devon landscaping project where the client had literally 4 days before moved into this house. The house had a great entrance garden but the back garden as you can see was a sight for sore eyes. The client, understandably after just buying the house did not want to spend out on a landscape designer and so we quickly sketched up a landscape concept on site to fathom the possibilities against the requirements. We sketched up a symetrical octagonal landscape that amalgamated lawn, decking and plant borders to create a solution where relaxation, function and form worked as a harmonious landscape design. The landscaping project was a real challenge as there was a lot of rubble to dispose of and also after 3 days the client was not sure about the appearence. This is a very common response we've experienced time and time again mid-way through a landscape project as it's when the garden looks its worst -neither here nor there! Fortunately we convinced the client to stay its course and with the help & persuasion from their builder cousin they thankfully saw the light. And what a corker it turned out to be! It all came together perfectly on the final day with the pergola suspended by wire to avoid uprights and the angles accentuating the views. Now we can't wait to see the Garden with the plants.

Newton Abbot Hard Landscaping, Steps & Retaining Walls

Another Seriously Good Landscaping but this time working on instinct rather than by a garden design plan. The client had recently bought a block of flats that needed some serious works, inside and out. They had a tight budget to work to hence why they wanted to save on a plan. Seriously Good Landscapes were called in to create a big impact. We first had the Tree Works team in hit the trees that had been left to run wild for about 2 decades; reducing, making them safe and improving the great view into Newton Abbot Town. Once that was done, we punched a hole through the wall to get the mini digger through as this was the only form of access. Once the mini digger had finished the hard landscaping and leveling, we started work on the step construction into the garden. We used reclaimed slabs and bricks for the steps and reclaimed sleepers as retainers down each side. Because the site was so steep and difficult to work with we decided to build a vertical sleeper retaining wall that was tensioned into the bank to avoid subsidence. The clients wanted a natural woodland themed garden so we were able to recreate natural curves postioning the sleepers vertically. Finally the slopes was de-weeded and terram membrane laid until they could do the planting. We hope to get some pictures of the finished article soon.

Chudleigh Landscaping Job Continued... Fencing, Decking.

Seriously Good Landscapes had already drawn up a garden plan and created the bespoke garden room, 4 vegetable & fruit patches & some planting. A year on and phase 2 required implementing a decking design and water feature social area. We decided to minimise the water feature to keep it low maintenance but keep with a running water theme using a rustic cascading structure out of a victorian chimney pot, vintage watering can & bucket. Doing this meant the water falling could hide any unwanted noises to enhance and maximise the social area. We knoced down the old shed that was completely misplaced and that made a dramatic impact visually throught the whole garden. Once that was out the way, we started creating the decking sub-structure and planter retainer. We aimed to create an area that made you feel you were in a 'controlled jungle' so made the planters surround the entire decked area. We spent a few hundred pounds on plants and shrubs and also made a small timber lean-to shed to hide any garden tools that were previously stored in the shed. We also extended the fence and strained a wire to train creepers along to increase privacy from neighbouring houses.
We also erected some picket fencing.

Teignmouth Landscaping, Patio, Balustrading, Turfing.

This Teignmouth Landscaping job provided a good challenge due to the fact that once again, a small budget was present and a tough deadline to uphold. Nevertheless, the six days we said we'd complete in was adhered to. It was up until the beggining of day 5 that we actually started to see the finishing touches, so as you can imagine, the first 4 days were tough going. We replaced the unsightly balustrade with some contemporary stainless steel wire balustrading and created a nice contrast with the turf complimenting the dark sleeper retaining walls. There was a small patio laid on the top level and two areas of quality fine turf laying.

Okehampton Landscaping, Fencing, Decking, Planting

This Okehampton landscaping design & build project is a great example of what can be achieved in a tiny space and a small budget. As you can see by the before images the space was very grubby and surrounded by dull, towering walls. With no opportunity to work with a view we had to create our own vista within. We also had to contend with a noisy main road. We built some simple decked pathways to create a level playing field so to speak. Climbers and shade loving plants were used to decorate the colourless surrounding walls, ferns, rhododendron, fox gloves, Chelones & Pachysandra etc. The year on photos demonstrate the effective landscaping transformation achievable with a small garden space and limited budget.

Marldon, Devon Decking & Landscaping Design & Build

This landscaping & Decking project in Marldon, Devon required a full decking planning application due to the recent legislation brought in regarding any decked platform over 300mm. A full elevation drawing plus numerous other forms and drawings needed filling out before work could commence. Needless to say, the application was granted and the design was fulfilled. The design allowed for an improved access to other parts of the garden and featured areas that took advantage of morning and evening sun spots. The decking was balustraded with stainless steel wire for safety purposes.
How much?- including the planning application £5700

Crediton, Devon Custom made Tree House With Zip-wire

A dream project- Design & build a tree house for 3 children near Crediton, Devon. A really satisfying and rewarding project to be involved in. The Oak Tree that was used was in the perfect location, surrounded by water that could only be accessed by swinging across the river to get to the ladder. Once up the two step ladders and through the trapdoor, you arrived at the main platform, some 35 feet in amongst the canopy. If the fort was being 'invaded' you could jump on the zip-wire that bridged the river 3 times and dissected the river's trees before landing safely some 90 metres away in a field. At no point was the tree harmed in this process. We use only the least damaging methods to secure the flooring. Once this is in place, the uprights and roof is supported by the floor.

Chudleigh Knighton Garden Reshuffle, Decking, Planting

Again, this landscape design and build project in Chudleigh Knighton involved working around a large hot tub in a small garden, not the ideal conditions to try and improve functionality. The garden did not have any planting zones before and it was important to create this naturally from solid cedar wood timbers. The family had a range of different ages so we tried to create age friendly zones for all, using the hot tub as the focal point. We planted a surround with a pergola overhead so that when you were in the hot tub, there was a green space to relax & socialise. Deck lights were also installed within the planters to create an evening ambience.

Kingsteignton Landscaping, Fencing, Decking, Planting

The clients for this landscape garden design and build project in Kingsteignton, Devon had recently moved in to the house and were welcomed by a very confused garden to contend with. hedges in the wrong places & yellow brick walls! We simplified the garden by landscape design to improve overall functionality and inspired some subtle planting. There was a great view out to the surrounding hills that had been blocked by a tall hedge so after removing the hedge, built some fencing, decking and pergola to enhance the view. We created some built in planters to soften decked areas and planted creepers to hide unsightly walls. You could hear the A380 dual carriage way so to conteract this, we designed and built a very simple cascading water feature that ran through a set of differing garden ornaments (cheap and effective whilst low maintenance)

Bishopsteignton, Devon Landscaping Transformation

This project involved complete landscaping of a very narrow and steep garden in Bishopsteignton, Devon. The client required a formal and functional area for entertaining guests and also the opportunity of growing fruit trees. Due to the garden size restrictions, we proposed training (espalier) the fruit trees down each side. At the bottom the client planned a glass pod room to be installed. On leaving the pod, we designed a cobbled ornamental rose garden and then up steps to the fruit tree area and finally a decked pergola area for entertaining and viewing the beautiful vista.

Chudleigh, Devon Complete Landscape Garden Redesign

The client who'd recently moved into a house in Chudleigh, Devon required a full landscape redesign on the garden with the main wish to be able to work in the garden away from the house, all year round. Seriously Good Landscapes designed a bespoke garden office room and set about building it from scratch, making sure the design would not breach any planning laws. The garden room was fully insulated with double glazing and a barn-door entrance. All of the electrics, lighting, flooring, plastering and painting was completed through our network of work friends. The garden had a number of excellent shrubs and tree specimens that we replanted to save on planting costs. We created 4 vegetable & fruit patches as well as making rustic arches and seats. We are expected back at some point to further develop the plot with decking and water fetures.
